Our Internships and Volunteer Opportunities

ESW Engineer - Catherine Chomat

All interns, researchers and volunteers are our honored guests. We welcome 2-5 international interns on a rolling basis, depending on projects and needs. All interns work with Senegalese partners, ensuring a cross-cultural exchange necessary to learn and work in Senegal. We often connect interns with our partner organizations, such as GENSEN and ANEV. See our
online form to inquire about our available internships.

We offer four types of internships:
     1. Paid internships, which provide a living allowance.
     2. Volunteer internships, for people with skills and interests matching our needs.
     3. Project development internships, for students to develop their research projects.
     4. Research internships, for individual dissertation research.

Paid Internships
We currently do not have any paid internships available.

Volunteer Internships
(For willing workers with special skills and experience.)

  • Office & public relations intern: provide translation (English <-> French), update the website and organization blogs, write press releases, develop a newsletter, create flyers, and provide general office support.
  • English and TOEFL teacher. Small subsidy provided, if candidate has previous Senegal experience.

Project Development Internships
(For interns with certain skills. An exterior funding source to develop these projects is necessary.)

  • Designing village workshops using training-the-trainers methodology. Projects in permaculture, solid and liquid waste reduction, biogas, alternative energy, solar cookers, organic agriculture, pesticide awareness... etc.
  • Ecotourism: Planning and marketing cultural discovery tours.
  • Starting a fair trade program with products from eco-villages.
  • Supporting curriculum for the Wolof values or French maids literacy programs.

Our support includes: on-going cultural orientation; introduction to experts and mentors, villages and villagers; wireless Internet access and work space; Senegalese work partners.

Finances: For students and recent graduates without previous experience in Africa or Senegal, fees depend on the duration of the visit. Fees cover:

  • room, board and laundry in a homestay family in Dakar and village(s);
  • travel expenses;
  • cultural orientation;
  • translation partner if you speak no French.

For interns interested in staying for one to two months, the fee is $550/month.  For interns interested in staying for three months or longer, the fee is $350/month. Interns with previous experience in Senegal typically find and cover their own costs and arrangements.

Research Internships
For people with ideas for projects, research, or thesis work they wish to develop with the EREV Institute's network or eco-villagers, and persons wishing to explore Senegal through service learning in villages or at EREV headquarters.

International and local students have collected masters and doctoral thesis data in eco-villages, on organic agriculture, urban and environmental planning, ICT and local governance...(and even on concepts of romantic love among Yoff's fisherwomen). Others have worked in program design and made lasting contributions to EREV's programs.

If you would like us to suggest an area both suitable for you and within the project areas of the EREV Institute,  please complete the
online form so that we may best match your interest to our organization. (The information you provide is expressly used for the purpose of suggesting an appropriate fit.)

Finances: For students and recent graduates without previous experience in Africa or Senegal, fees depend on the duration of the visit.  Research covers the cost of room, board and laundry in a home stay family in Dakar and/or village(s), plus  cultural orientation, and possibly your Senegalese work partner.  For researchers interested in staying for one to two months, the fee is $750/month.  For researchers interested in staying for three months or longer, the fee is $400/month.  Researchers with previous experience in Senegal typically find and cover their own costs and arrangements.
